Put that shampoo down! And drop that bottle of conditioner too while you’re at it!
Just wondering, how often you should shampoo? I've heard a lot of things from a lot of people, some say every day some say every other, and some say every third day. What do you all think people ?

The answer?
It’s really up to you. It used to be the general belief that shampooing everyday was a necessity – after all, who doesn’t love having smooth, clean strands every morning? However, the truth is that over-cleaning your hair can actually dry out your scalp and trick it into thinking that it needs to replenish what has been removed. In other words, your scalp will produce extra sebum (an oil that your skin and scalp naturally secrete), which can make your hair look greasier.
I shampoo once every three days. On the second day, I use dry shampoo to keep my strands fresh! Because I have coarse hair, my stylist recommended that I not over wash my hair. “the longer, thicker and more processed your hair, the longer it can go between washes”.
However, some people may have oily hair or super-fine hair that needs to be washed more frequently. If you’re A GYM PERSON or have hair that naturally falls limp if you don’t wash it everyday, try spritzing dry shampoo on your scalp between washes. Dry shampoo will soak up the excess oil near your scalp and revive your locks. If you are using a spray version, just make sure you are spraying at least 6 inches away from your roots to avoid buildup.
Here’s a rough guide for how often you should wash your hair:
Everyday: If you use high-street brand gel, wax, styling clay or other sticky styling products, you need to wash your hair everyday – I explain why this is later in the article.
1 – 14 days: If you don’t use leave-in styling products like gel you can wash your hair as little as once every two weeks. However, keep an eye on your scalp. If it gets shiny and greasy wash your scalp to keep the pores clear.
1 – 7 days: If you want to use styling products like gel you can wash your hair less frequently providing you use natural styling products that do not clog the scalps pores.
In a pinch? Sprinkle some baby powder on your palm and use that on your scalp instead. Just make sure you have brushed it through so there isn’t any white residue left (especially important for the dark-haired ladies).
I want to know – how often do you shampoo your hair and what tips and tricks have you picked up along the way?
Love,
Aaisha.
